Updated: Oct 5, 2019

When that sun comes out I get the jitters and I want to go outside. Enjoy the chattering birds that are finishing their nests and may have already laid an egg. Enjoy the scent of freshly cut grass and laze on a garden chair from the warmth of the sun. In short; fully enjoy the outdoors.

Plastic is out!

The white garden furniture that we brought from the old house stems from the time that we first started living together, really, it's that old! But I have always maintained it very well and therefore thought it a shame to do away. Nevertheless, we chose to purchase a new garden set when we moved.

Choose the right set at the right place

At the new house, we have both a terrace and a roof. But when it is full summer, the roof makes this seating area so hot that you have the feeling that you are sitting in a greenhouse or sauna. For that reason, we have opted for a lounge set for under that roof, and a garden set for on the terrace. High chairs with a large table where you can enjoy a drink and BBQ together. Durable, light and easy to maintain

These sets are not made of plastic but made of aluminum. Durable, light in weight and easy to maintain. To enjoy this for years to come, I sought a number of tips together to maintain these garden chairs well.

Maintenance-free garden furniture

Nowadays, a variety of maintenance-free garden furniture made of aluminum and (braided) plastic is for sale. The braided material, called Wicker, is made of plastic and therefore lasts for years. Aluminum garden furniture is very lightweight and will not rust. Both types are very easy to maintain and can remain outside all year round if you wish. It is recommended to store them in the winter months.

In addition to wicker and aluminum, there are several materials that garden sets are made of, such as plastic, metal and preserved hardwood or regular wood. And much use is still made of chairs with fabric upholstery, which can also be enjoyed for a very long time with proper care.

Tips for the maintenance of your garden furniture

  1. Allow garden furniture with a fabric cover, or the fabric cover itself, to dry naturally if possible before storing.

  2. Store garden furniture with fabric or fabric upholstery during the season in a well-ventilated area.

  3. Every now and then, lubricate the shafts and hinges with a little bit of oil. Then clean it.

  4. Also, check from time to time that all screws are tight.

  5. You can fix loose rivets again by having one side rest on a hard surface and with a hammer give a big tap on the head of the rivet.

  6. Process wooden parts or unprocessed wooden garden set once a year, in dry weather, with a colorless preservative.

  7. Due to the higher humidity, it is best to store your garden furniture in the house or in a dry, frost-resistant room in winter.

  8. Before you tidy up garden furniture, and that applies to all garden sets; first thoroughly clean them and lightly lubricate metal parts with a little oil.

  9. If you remove the seats again in the spring, you wipe the oil off again.

Make your investment worth the money

You have garden furniture in all shapes and sizes. In this time, the outdoors is an extension of your home. To organize that 'outside room' nicely, you sometimes have to use some savings. When I invest in such things, I also want to enjoy it for a very long time. Only then is it a good investment. And that is why the maintenance of your garden furniture is very important. And you can also invest your money for marble god statues for your home and garden.
